A Taste of MAKOM

Special 2-Week Mini Sessions

The miniest of mini classes – choose from a variety of hands on, experiential 2 week sessions that will meet for both hours from 7-9.

These special Mini Classes are open to any student in grades 7-12 and are free to any teen in the community

  • L’Chaim! Nutrition and Healthful Cooking

This class will explore the fundamentals of nutrition. We will learn together and cook together. Week One: Basic Nutrition: Healthy choices for a healthful life Week Two: Continuing on the theme of sound nutrition, we will further explore the importance of Calcium and Vitamin D. In celebration of the upcoming holiday of Shavuot, we will cook a healthful and tasty dairy treat together. Instructor: Sara J. Labowe, RD, CD-N

  • Jam and Chant

Learn new, Hebrew chants off the new CD Shemantra by Richard Gans.  If you play an instrument or like to sing, you will love this new form of spiritual/artistic expression.  Bring your instruments and your creativity. At the end of the mini session we will make a professional recording for you to download.

  • Israeli Art  

The Arts & Crafts Fair of Nachlat-Binyamin, Tel-aviv, is known for its colorful range of artists, craftsmen, colors, materials, voices & fragrances for several decades. Now, we bring some of that magical experience to Makom.  Be prepared to use your imagination, work hard but most of all have fun!

  • Screenwriting

What goes into creating a successful screenplay?  Using real screenplays as our guide, we will explore different aspects of Judaism from culture, to history, and the Bible to create our own scenes on the page, and even bring them to life.

  • Culture and Assimilation

The question of assimilation is one that every generation of Jews must contemplate. How much should we blend in? How much of our cultural individuality should we protect?  What are the alternatives to preserving our heritage and culture? Using video clips and discussion, we will explore these questions and more.
